The Academy Music Department offers courses designed to explore a diverse set of musical expressions through band, choir, guitar, Hawaiian music, orchestra, and creative music. These courses encourage students to engage with music's fundamental artistic processes: creating, performing, responding and connecting, recognizing music as an intrinsic and unique aspect of human thought. Our community-centered music offerings provide abundant opportunities for students to develop personal skills through collaborative creation, arrangement, rehearsal, and performance of music. Academy musicians:
- Acquire skills in singing or playing instruments, improvising, composing, reading, and notating music in ways that support life-long participation and appreciation of music.
- Refine understanding, terminology, and descriptive ability to critique, examine and appraise music and musical performances.
- Cultivate healthy personal attitudes such as focus, independence, risk-taking, persistence, resilience, creativity, empathy and collaboration through music making.
- Explore a rich historical and cultural musical heritage, connecting with diverse cultures and disciplines to embody the human spirit through music.
Academy students must earn two credits in performing or visual arts courses in order to graduate. Many students choose to continue their music instruction through elective credit as well.
