Students with or without prior playing experience are welcome to join the Fifth Grade Beginning Orchestra. Students will be introduced to the orchestral stringed instruments at the start of the school year, then select an instrument of their choosing to study and be fitted for appropriate size. Through the study of violin, viola, cello, or bass, students not only learn how to play their instrument of choice, but also learn the fundamentals of music. This includes rhythm, melody, harmony, music notation, music theory, and ensemble performance. In addition, emphasis is placed on developing fine motor skills, multi-sensory learning, patience, persistence, and cooperation. The goal of the program is to give students necessary skills not only to facilitate participation in future intermediate through advanced level orchestras, but also to instill an appreciation for music, develop critical thinking skills, and foster a positive classroom environment that builds self-esteem and teamwork. The year will conclude with a performance for family and friends during the school day.
Note: Students will need to rent or purchase their own instrument for at-home practice. For class use, students may use the school’s instruments or they may use their purchased or rented instruments instead. The Punahou Orchestra program does not provide student rentals. Information will be provided on rental options from local music stores at the start of the school year.
