Papa Mele Hula is designed to immerse students in the moʻolelo (stories) of Moku o Keawe, Hawai‘i Island. In this year-long course, participants will explore oli (chant), hula (dance), and mele (songs) directly connected to their outdoor education experience in the Spring. The ensemble introduces Hawaiian implements like ipu, kala‘au, pū'ili, ‘ulī'ulī, and 'ili'ili, adding a percussion element to their musical experience. Students with prior experience on ʻukulele or guitar may have the opportunity to form a small combo to accompany the class. The culmination of this musical exploration will be a Hō‘ike (performance) during the school day, where students showcase their learning, fostering a sense of pride and connection with family and friends.
