Aloha dance families! We invite our Punahou Dance School students to pick from the options below in order to find the dancewear that feels most comfortable, inclusive and productive for them to work in during class. If you have any questions regarding the dress code, please email

BalletLeotard, pink or flesh tone tights, pink or flesh tone canvas shoes, hair in a bun OR full-length black, footed tights, a white, long or short sleeve leotard or form fitting white T-shirt free of words, and black ballet shoes. Hair should be out of face.
PointeLeotard, pink or flesh tone tights, pink or flesh tone pointe shoes, hair in a bun OR full-length black, footed tights, a white, long or short sleeve leotard or form fitting white T-shirt free of words, and pointe shoes. Hair should be out of face.
Contemporary DanceAthletic wear the dancer can move freely in that will not restrict movement or become a distraction. Leotard or sleeveless top, bike shorts, loose fitting top, athletic pants or leggings. (Please no dresses, skirts or denim.)
For shoes, bare feet or contemporary half soles for performance. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.
TapLeggings or shorts (no skirts), black tap shoes and socks. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.
Musical Theatre Dance
Leggings or shorts (no denim), and tan jazz shoes. Please no dresses or skirts. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.
JazzLeotard or sleeveless top, bike shorts or leggings, jazz pants or fitted athletic wear. Tan jazz shoes. Half soles may be needed for performances. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.
Dance Tumbling
Leotard or sleeveless top paired with bike shorts, leggings, jazz pants, or other fitted athletic wear. Dancers will be barefoot in the studio. If there is an opportunity to perform, shoe requirements will be shared at a later date. Hair should be secured in a ponytail (if applicable) and kept away from the face and off the neck.
Street, Breaking and Street Crew
Dancers may wear comfortable, street-style clothing that supports freedom of movement and reflects the style of the genre (such as sweatpants, joggers, and baggy T-shirts). A looser fit is encouraged to support full range of motion and enhance movement quality. Clean sneakers worn only for dance are required. Hair should be secured away from the face and neck (e.g., in a ponytail, if applicable). For safety and ease of movement, we recommend avoiding leggings, shorts, crop tops, tank tops, skirts, and skorts.
Dance Team, Mini Dance Team & Petite TeamLeotard or sleeveless top, bike shorts or leggings, jazz pants or fitted athletic wear. Tan jazz shoes. Half soles may be needed for performances. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.
