Punahou Dance School offers classes in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, musical theatre dance, street dance, break dancing, boys technique, dance tumbling and contemporary dance for K – 12 students at Punahou and from the community.

Classes, held in the Josephine Flanders Dance Pavilion, are taught by accomplished faculty with years of experience in teaching, choreography and performance.

  • Days, Times and Fees

    Each dance course consists of one class per week. See the course catalog for specific times and fees.
  • Escorting

    Parents enrolling K – grade 5 students should review the information about escorting.
  • Dress Code

    Aloha dance families! We invite our Punahou Dance School students to pick from the options below in order to find the dancewear that feels most comfortable, inclusive and productive for them to work in during class. If you have any questions regarding the dress code, please email danceschool@punahou.edu.

    Ballet, Ballet Variations & Progressing Ballet Technique
    Leotard, pink or flesh tone tights, pink or flesh tone canvas shoes, hair in a bun OR full-length black, footed tights, a white, long or short sleeve leotard or form fitting white T-shirt free of words, and black ballet shoes. Hair should be out of face.

    Pointe
    Leotard, pink or flesh tone tights, pink or flesh tone pointe shoes, hair in a bun OR full-length black, footed tights, a white, long or short sleeve leotard or form fitting white T-shirt free of words, and pointe shoes. Hair should be out of face.

    Contemporary/ Modern
    Athletic wear the dancer can move freely in that will not restrict movement or become a distraction. Leotard or sleeveless top, bike shorts, loose fitting top, athletic pants or leggings. (Please no dresses, skirts or denim.)

    For shoes, bare feet or contemporary half soles for performance. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

    Street and Breaking
    Sweatpants or joggers and baggy t-shirts. No leggings, shorts, crop tops or tank tops. Clean sneakers worn ONLY for dance. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

    Tap
    Leggings or shorts (no skirts), black tap shoes and socks. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

    Musical Theatre Dance
    Leggings or shorts (no denim), and tan jazz shoes. Please no dresses or skirts. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

    Jazz and Tumbling
    Leotard or sleeveless top, bike shorts or leggings, jazz pants or fitted athletic wear. Tan jazz shoes. Half soles may be needed for performances. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

    Boys Technique
    Fitted t-shirt or tank top, athletic shorts, jazz pants, sweatpants, joggers or leggings. Tan jazz shoes. Hair should be neatly styled away from the face and off the neck if applicable.

    Dance Team & Mini Dance Team
    Leotard or sleeveless top, bike shorts or leggings, jazz pants or fitted athletic wear. Tan jazz shoes. Half soles may be needed for performances. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

    Ballroom Dance
    Form fitting clothing, ballroom or character shoes preferred, or jazz shoes. Hair should be in a ponytail if applicable, and away from face and off the neck.

Josephine Flanders Dance Pavilion

All classes are held in the Josephine Flanders Dance Pavilion located on upper campus. Named after the Dance School’s founder, this state-of-the-art facility was completed in 2008 and is one of the finest of its kind. There are three separate studios, two of which can be combined into one larger space. Each air-conditioned studio is equipped with the latest sound equipment and dance flooring.

    The Dance School is part of Punahou’s Co-Curricular Programs, offering over 50 classes a week, Monday through Saturday.

    Our curriculum is built around an annual performance opportunity. Students who choose to participate bring their classwork to the stage, applying what they've learned throughout the year.
