The tennis coaches have excellent training and many years of experience in teaching, coaching and playing at national level and international levels.

They are passionate and enthusiastic about tennis, sportsmanship and  athletic development, and look forward to giving back to the next generation.

  • Ikaika Jobe

    Director of Tennis, Head Boys Varsity Tennis Coach, USPTA Elite Professional 

     A 2001 Punahou graduate, Jobe was a 2-time Hawai‘i State High School Singles Champion. He earned a scholarship to play Division I college tennis at Saint Louis University (2001 – 2004) where he served as team captain prior to transferring to Boise State University (2004 – 2005), where he contributed to a 2005 WAC Team Championship title. Following college, Jobe played professionally for 3 years, obtaining a Top 50 U.S. singles ranking, Top 800 ATP singles ranking, and Top 400 ATP Doubles ranking.

    Jobe was awarded the USPTA “Player of the Year” award 3 years in a row (2013 - 2015) and USPTA “Professional of the Year” in 2021.  From 2009 - 2013, while also in law school, Jobe served as an Assistant Coach for the University of Hawai‘i Men’s Tennis Team where they 3-peated as WAC Team Champions.  In 2013, Jobe was hired as Head Coach of the Punahou Girls Varsity Tennis Team and in 2016 he became Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Tennis Team.  

    Jobe has worked at Punahou since 2013.
  • Cynthia Chan

    USTA, Tennis Faculty

    Chan is an avid tennis player.  She has assisted as a tennis referee/linesman for junior and age division tournaments.  Chan also worked as a owner/operator of hotel tennis facility, front desk supervisor for a 750 member club in the SoCal area.

  • Jamie Dela Cruz

    Tennis Faculty

    Dela Cruz has been with Punahou Tennis for 14 years and has done both group and private lessons on the school campus. He has played both in high school and college and loves teaching kids the sport of a lifetime. Dela Cruz is also a 3rd grade teacher in the Junior School at Punahou and holds a Doctorate and Master’s Degree in Education.
     
    Dela Cruz has worked at Punahou since 2007.
  • John Dye

    USPTA, Tennis Faculty, Boys Intermediate Tennis Coach, Girls JV Tennis Coach

    Dye has competed at the USTA 18 & over 4.5 Team Nationals four times. He served as Head Varsity Tennis Coach for both Boys and Girls teams at Kalani High School 2014 – 2016, and received Coach of theYear honors three times.

    Dye has worked at Punahou since 2016.
  • Ben Erickson

    USPTA, Tennis Faculty

    Erickson has been teaching tennis for the past forty years and been playing for the past fifty years.

    Erickson has worked at Punahou since 2004.
  • Brent Hunter

    USPTA, USPTA Elite Certified, USTA High performance Coach, Tennis Faculty, ITPA, CTPS

    Hunter was USPTA rookie of the year in 2008, and Tyler Junior College (National Champions) All American.

    Brent has worked at Punahou from 2007-2018 and returned to Punahou in January 2020.

  • Anna Kern

    USPTA Certified Professional, Tennis Faculty

    Anna is a former 3 time state champion from Corvallis, OR, going undefeated for three years on the high school level. She went on to play for Claremont Mudd Scripps for one year, the current national champions in Division III. In this year she earned ITA All-American and was on the SCIAC All-Academic team. She then transferred to play Division 1 at University of Hawai‘i and is currently playing there. Anna is also a certified yoga instructor and teaches yoga as well as tennis. Anna worked in the after school tennis program and coached the 2021 Girls’ Intermediate, JV, and Varsity teams. Anna is currently working in the summer 2022 program.

    Anna been working at Punahou since 2021.
  • Pam Kim

    USPTA, Tennis Faculty

    Pam played Division I Collegiate Tennis at UCLA. She played tennis competitively in California and achieved a ranking in the juniors and qualified to play at the National Hardcourts Tournament.
    At Punahou, Pam Coached the ILH Girls’ JV and Girls’ Intermediate Teams. Additionally, Pam’s Instructor/Coaching experiences include Afterschool, Summer Tennis Programs and Private lessons.

    In California, Pam Coached the Varsity Tennis Team at Marymount School, a Private Girls’ School in Los Angeles. She also worked as a Tennis Instructor/Coach at Bassett/Martin Tennis Camp.

    Kim has worked at Punahou since 2005.
  • John Kop

    USPTA Professional 1, Tennis Faculty
    
    Kop was a former USTA Hawaii Team Coach for the Boys and Girls 16s National Tournament and Team Captain for Kailua Racquet Club Adult-League Team Tennis.  During his 20-year stay in China, he worked for numerous tennis facilities as a Head Coach, Director or Fitness Trainer.  These facilities include Coach Sports Beijing Association, China Tennis Academy, Fire Sports Center, Guangzhou, and Haidian Sports School, Beijing.  Kop was also a full-time touring coach for Jessica Yang, China’s Girls 12s and 14s National Champion from 2003-2005.  He was a Nike/Junior China Coach in 2005 (Spain Tour) and 2006 (France Tour)

    Kop has worked at Punahou since 2018.
     



  • Chris Ma

    USPTA, Tennis Faculty, Boys’ Varsity Assistant Coach 

    A 1997 Punahou graduate, Ma was a 3-time HHSAA State Singles and Doubles Champion.  He played 4 years of NCAA Division 1 Tennis at University of California - Irvine.  Ma
    earned the All Big-West Conference Awards in Singles and Doubles, Captain and MVP as a Senior.  He also was a recipient of the 2001 ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.

    Ma has been with Punahou since 2015.
     
  • Craig Mason

    USPTA Certified Instructor, Tennis Faculty

    Craig enjoys coaching at Punahou School, from which he graduated in 1991. He spent seven years coaching a Top 10-in-State Varsity team in Texas, including several Division I players and a State singles champ. He further developed a love for the game by coaching his three daughters to the highest level of USTA Texas Junior competition.
  • Roarke McLean

    PTR Certified, Tennis Faculty

    Roake was a BIIF (Big Island Interscholastic Federation) doubles champion in 2006. McLean played competitively while at the University of Oregon from 2006 – 2009. He has previously coached at The Oahu Club working with the JTT (Junior Team Tennis) program, Junior Under 10 program, and teaching private lessons.

    McLean has worked at Punahou since 2021 coaching the after school program, summer programs as well as conducting private lessons.
  • Sean Nakamoto

    ILH Coach, USPTA, Tennis Faculty, Boys JV Tennis Head Coach, Girls’ Intermediate Tennis Assistant Coach

    2018 USTA Hawaii Zonals 12 and under Coach, 2019 USTA Hawaii Zonals 14 and Under Coach. Competed in Southern California as a junior. Lettered 3 years at Venice Senior High School in Southern California. 
     
    Nakamoto has worked at Punahou since 2012.
  • Fumiya Nakano

    ILH Coach, USPTA, Tennis Faculty, Girls Varsity Tennis Assistant Coach, Girls JV Tennis Head Coach, Girls Intermediate Head Coach

    A 2008 Punahou graduate, Nakano went on to earn a BS in Kinesiology from University of Hawaii. He is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, and has earned the Mike McKinnon Sportsmanship award and USPTA Volunteer of the Year.  Coached juniors from elementary to high school. Coached Top state players and nationally ranked players. Been the traveling coach for the top 16s players and top 18s girls of the state at National Tournaments the past 4 years.

    Nakano has worked at Punahou since 2008.
  • Jason Oliver

    ILH Coach, Girls Varsity Tennis Head Coach

    A 1993 graduate, Oliver was a member of Punahou’s Varsity team, continuing on to play at the University of Redlands from 1994 to 1997 (NCAA Div. III 5th place team finish 1994, 1996, 1997; 6th place team finish 1995; Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champions 1995, 1996 and 1997) and earning First Team All-conference honors in 1995, 1996 and 1997, All-American honors in singles and doubles in 1996, and being named team captain in 1997. As a coach, Oliver has served in all facets of Punahou’s tennis program since 1993 including but not limited to summer school, JTT, after school tennis, high performance, and interscholastic programs. In addition, Oliver has worked with junior players in Germany. Oliver is grateful to Punahou Tennis for all it has given him and endeavors to give back as much as he can.
  • Roberta Russo

    USPTA Certified, Tennis Faculty

    Russo started playing tennis in Italy at age 5 and began competing in her teens and travelled the world. After graduating from college with a Sports Management degree, Russo coached and taught at various tennis facilities in Europe such as in Naples, Italy and Sanchez Casal in Spain.  She was formerly ranked as high as 900 on the Women's tour. Russo is a FIT (Italian Tennis Federation) and ITF (International Tennis Federation) coach.  She has directed 2 tennis programs and wheelchair tennis programs. Russo moved to Hawaii in 2015 and since then worked at Punahou school for the afterschool program and as the Girls Varsity Tennis assistant coach for 4 years.  She currently is a Director of Tennis at the Four Seasons at Ko-olina.  Russo continues to work at Punahou to assist with the cardio tennis and private tennis programs..Russo started playing tennis at age 5 and began competing in Italy in her teens and travelled all over the world.

    Formerly ranked as high as 900 on the Women's tour, Russo is a FIT (Italian Tennis Federation) and ITF (International Tennis Federation) coach.
  • Thomas Shubert

    Assistant Director of Tennis, Head Boys Varsity II Tennis Coach, USPTA Elite Professional

    Shubert attended Punahou from kindergarten to fourth grade. As a junior player, he was ranked top 25 in the nation (18U division) and went on to captain the Div. 1 BYU Cougars (Provo) under full scholarship. After winning the MWC championships in 2010 and 2011, he graduated with a bachelors in Psychology/Sport Psychology, and was ranked in the global ATP rankings 2011 – 2015. Shubert still enjoys competing and hopes his daughter, Olivia, will join the sport one day. Shubert currently serves as a VP on the USPTA Board of Hawaii Division.

    Previous to Punahou, Shubert was an international tennis journalist and executive assistant with InsideOut Sports Entertainment. During that time, he was also a hitting partner for pros like Pete Sampras, Venus and Serena Williams, Michael Chang, John McEnroe, Milos Raonic, and Sloane Stephens. Shubert has helped many students get to the next level, with many going on to play collegiately at universities like Columbia, CalTech, UPenn, U. of Southern California, U. of Florida, and Cornell.

    Shubert has worked at Punahou since 2017.
  • Scout Shutter

    Tennis Faculty, Assistant Girls Varsity Coach

    Shutter graduated from Punahou in 2013 after playing on the Punahou Girls Varsity Tennis team for four years. Following high school, she played Division I College Tennis at California State University Northridge on a 4-year scholarship.  Shutter has coached a number of Nike Tennis Camps and was the Girls Varsity Tennis Assistant Coach during the 2019 – 2020 school year. In addition to coaching at Punahou, I have coached in a number of Nike Tennis Camps with kids of all ages as well as coached private and small group lessons.
     
    Shutter has worked at Punahou since 2018.
  • George Tsai

    Tennis Faculty, USPTA Professional

    Tsai was a nationally-ranked junior from the state of Florida. Played at Amherst College (1998 – 2002) and was team captain (2001 – 2002). 

    Tsai has worked at Punahou since 2017.
  • Fred Wong

    Tennis Faculty, USPTA Tennis Instructor

    Wong loves working with young children. He is a former Maryknoll soccer coach and certified referee. Wong also is a USTA certified tennis referee.Coaching children has been a major part of my life but includes not only tennis former certified ILH Maryknoll soccer coach and referee and USTA certified tennis referee.

    Wong has worked at Punahou since 2009.
