Language Programs

Language learning is an important element throughout the K – 12 curriculum because it allows students the opportunity to gain an appreciation for other cultures and an awareness of what makes us unique. We are all part of an increasingly global community where self-awareness, cultural understanding, tolerance, and flexibility are essential attributes for success. Wo Center supports the K-12 language program.
In keeping our keiki connected to their roots, Hawaiian language and culture are integrated into the school day curriculum from kindergarten to third grade. Young students not only begin to build basic language skills, but are also immersed in the (Hawaiian) culture for the duration of their studies. Students are also able to participate in a number of language- and culture-rich experiences after school including co-curricular course offerings in the Hawaiian Arts (HĀ) such as hula and ukulele, as well as after school language enrichment courses in French, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish.

Beginning in the seventh grade, Punahou offers elective language choices, including French, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. In the Academy, students need a minimum of two consecutive levels of a single language to fulfill graduation requirements. Course offerings include French, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Arabic is also available through Global Online Academy.
