The middle school orchestra program (violin, viola, cello and double bass) includes grade level orchestras from sixth through eighth grade. Students who wish to join the orchestra program as a beginner may join the orchestra program in sixth grade. Those with previous experience can enroll in seventh and eighth grade orchestras. In addition, there are also auditioned opportunities to be a part of the chamber string program.
In sixth grade, students will be able to choose a new instrument or continue with the instrument they studied in fifth grade. Through the study of violin, viola, cello, or bass, students not only learn how to play their instrument of choice, but also learn the fundamentals of music. This includes rhythm, melody, harmony, music notation, music theory, and ensemble performance. In addition, emphasis is placed on developing fine motor skills, multi-sensory learning, patience, persistence, and cooperation. The goal of the program is to give students necessary skills not only to facilitate participation in future intermediate through advanced level orchestras, but also to instill an appreciation for music, develop critical thinking skills, and foster a positive classroom environment that builds self-esteem and teamwork.
