Music School

Punahou Music School offers lessons in piano, string, wind, brass and percussion as well as in voice, guitar and harp. The program also provides specialized Suzuki Violin training, along with lessons in music theory and composition. The Music School welcomes children of all ages and levels of experience, including those from other schools.

Individual and small-group lessons are held in Montague Hall. The faculty, with extensive backgrounds in teaching and performance, guide students in refining their technique and expression, creating the foundation for a life-long appreciation for music. In 2019, Punahou Music School celebrated its 100th anniversary.

  • Private Lessons

    Individual music instruction is offered in 30-, 45- or 60-minute appointments for 16 weeks each semester. Instruction is available for a wide variety of instruments, subject to availability.

    Private lessons are scheduled on an individually arranged basis depending on the teacher’s schedule and the student's availability.
  • Group Classes

    Group instruction is also available for students to develop their musical technique in a class of similar age and/or ability.
  • Days, Times and Fees

    Meeting days and times will vary depending on the type of lesson. See the course catalog for specific times and fees.
  • Attendance Policy

    The policy for private lessons allows a maximum of two make-up lessons per semester for absences due to the student's illness or approved academically-related school activities. In case of illness, contact the music instructor directly or the Music School by 8 a.m. on the morning of the lesson at the latest. For planned school activities, advise the Music School at least one day prior to the lesson. Extended absences due to illness or injuries will be arranged between teacher, parent and director on a case-by-case basis. There are no make-up lessons for group lessons or classes.
