Athletics is an integral part of the Punahou experience. With over 120 teams competing in 21 different sports at intermediate, junior varsity and varsity levels, there is tremendous opportunity for participation. Sixty-two percent of the student body in grades 7 – 12 participate annually in athletics.
Punahou's general philosophy for athletics affirms the development of the cultural, intellectual and physical potential of each student. It encourages student athletes to be the best that they can be and to be a true team player with the idea teamwork is what defines winning. Coaches constantly attempt to diffuse the "win at all costs" attitude that is so prevalent in high school athletics.
Intermediate teams are selected with the goal of having balance among the teams and focuses on developing fundamentals and encouraging participation. At the junior varsity level, the goal is to continue to balance teams, but in combinations that will foster growth and development toward the varsity level. At the varsity level, there is a stronger goal of competition, but within the context of good sportsmanship and honesty. Winning is not the ultimate yardstick at Punahou, but rather growth through athletics.
Coaches are Educators
Athletics at Punahou are an extension of the classroom, an opportunity to reinforce the values, qualities and skills that are an essential part of a Punahou education. The School recognizes that the traits of the best coaches are the same as those of great teachers: The ability to give effective feedback, engage students over extended periods of time and establish relationships with each individual.
Understanding that they play a vital role in developing the whole child, Punahou is committed to working with coaches so they are best prepared to support their student athletes beyond the drills and mechanics of their sport.
The Athletics Department regularly offers professional development opportunities for the nearly 300 coaches on campus. These opportunities include guest speakers, workshops and a partnering program that pairs coaches with members of the faculty and staff. This partnership helps coaches, who might be unfamiliar with the School, to understand their student-athletes and the environment they operate in.
Punahou coaches strive to maximize the cultural, intellectual and physical potential of each student while diffusing the “win at all costs” attitude that is so prevalent in high school athletics.
