Financial Aid

April 3, 2020

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these troubled times. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all facets of life, and its effects on our economy have been profound. While we are confident that our community will emerge from this period even stronger, the road ahead will be challenging. Some of you are already feeling the financial impact of this crisis, and we are committed to doing our very best to support you during this period of upheaval.

If you are experiencing financial hardship because of the COVID-19 pandemic and believe that this may jeopardize your child’s access to a Punahou education, please know that we are here to help:

  • If you have a monthly tuition payment plan and have questions concerning your final tuition payment in April, please email
  • If your child is a current student and you have already applied for financial aid for the 2020-21 school year but now want to submit an update, please upload any documentation to your SSS account (i.e. paystubs showing reduced income, unemployment checks, letter from employer stating layoff) by May 15, and the committee will take it into consideration before sending out awards on the normal award date of May 31. We can also re-assess after May 31, and you will be notified in June or July depending on when we receive your information.
  • If your child is a current student and you have not applied for financial aid for the 2020-21 school year but now want to apply, you can still turn in a late application. Late applications will be assessed in the order received and after all the on-time applications. If your application is received by May 15, we can mail out a decision by early June. Please download our application packet. In addition to the items on the checklist, please upload any other relevant documentation (i.e. recent paystubs, unemployment checks, letter from employer) in the “Additional Documents” section.

Affording a Punahou Education

Students are admitted to Punahou based on their potential to thrive, not on their family’s ability to pay. The School offers need-based aid, taking into account many factors including income, net worth, standard living expenses, family size and the number of children attending tuition-charging schools (except graduate school.) Financial aid is not based on academic, artistic or athletic skills.

Currently, 20 percent of students receive financial aid with an average award of $10,400. Financial aid currently assists qualifying families with incomes from $0 to more than $175,000. Families with higher incomes who receive aid have an average of three children in private schools.

Financial aid is a priority at Punahou because it helps to create a diverse student body, representative of the Hawai‘i community, each member of which contributes to the learning experience of all Punahou students.

Applying for financial aid does not influence an application for admission. Admission to Punahou is need-blind and the decisions of the admission committee and the financial aid committee are made independently.

Applying for Aid

Aid is awarded by the Financial Aid Committee and is granted to students who have a demonstrated financial need. Aid is granted for a period of one year, based on current information; changes in a family's situation may change the amount awarded from year to year.

Financial assistance is available to both new and continuing students who are U.S. citizens. International students may apply for aid, however, there are limited funds for this purpose.

The Financial Aid Committee reserves the right to provide aid as it sees fit within the existing resources after all applications are reviewed.
