Global Online Academy

Punahou School is a founding member of Global Online Academy (GOA), a consortium of schools around the world whose mission is to reimagine learning to empower students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society. As a GOA member school, we leverage the power of this global network to amplify our programs support and strengthen innovative teaching practices, and broaden academic opportunities for our students.

Established in 2011, the GOA offers diverse and rigorous credit-bearing courses to students in member schools around the world. All GOA courses have synchronous components (when students collaborate together or work with their teacher at a set time. Courses are designed, developed and taught by teachers from member schools and meet the rigor and high quality for which these schools are well-known.

Students can pursue specialized certifications like Learning Pathways or Global Pathways by completing three or more courses. This certification creates opportunities for deeper learning in a field of study and helps students share their unique learning journey in the college admissions process.

  • Academic Calendar

    The GOA semester calendar start and end dates are different from those at Punahou. Refer to  course dates listed at globalonlineacademy.org for specific term details.
  • Credit

    GOA courses are equivalent to an honors or AP course in hours of engagement to complete the course. Courses offer satisfy general elective credit at Punahou. Semester courses earn one-half credit and year courses earn one credit. Students may only enroll in GOA courses not currently offered at Punahou.
  • Enrollment

    Class size is limited and drawn from participating schools, so enrollment of Punahou students is limited. Punahou students may enroll in only one GOA course per semester and selection may be by lottery if necessary. Students may register for GOA courses during their programming conference with the Dean. Enrollment in any GOA course is subject to Dean’s approval.
  • Student Qualifications

    GOA courses are open to students in grades 10, 11, 12. Students considering these online courses should be intrinsically motivated, effective at time management and have reliable WiFi access for the duration of the course. GOA classes can only be taken as a 6th class in the student’s schedule.
  • Tuition

    The full tuition cost of GOA courses will be charged to student accounts. Students may apply for Financial Aid through the Financial Aid office.
