Patrick and Harriet Carmody Endowed Program Fund for Band

Rachel Carmody ’95 and her husband, John Slyconish, established this endowed fund in honor of Rachel’s parents, Patrick and Harriet Carmody. By providing a nurturing childhood environment that was full of wonder and adventures, by prioritizing self-paced learning, and by giving Rachel and her sister Christine Carmody ’00 the freedom to explore their diverse interests, Patrick and Harriet instilled in their daughters the belief that learning is fun, limitless and inherently interdisciplinary.
During their time at Punahou, Rachel and Christine were both active members of the band community, with Rachel playing clarinet and Christine playing trumpet in the marching band and wind ensemble, and Rachel also serving for two years as a drum major. Band fostered lifelong friendships, opened doors and was a microcosm of the principles that Patrick and Harriet valued in learning – at once encouraging personal growth, challenging us in orthogonal ways and bringing us so much joy! With this endowed fund, Rachel and John hope to help deliver such experiences for other students, and to enable the continued excellence of the band program at Punahou.
