Kuini Liliha

The Kuini Liliha Endowed Financial Aid Fund was named after the Chiefess Kuini Liliha who served the Kingdom of Hawai‘i as royal governor of O‘ahu island from 1829 to 1831. Under heavy political pressure from rival Queen Ka‘ahumanu, Chiefess Kuini Liliha donated the lands on which Punahou now stands in 1829.
That same year, her husband, Governor Boki, departed Hawai‘i to search for sandalwood in Vanuatu, and he named Liliha Governor of O‘ahu. But her reign was short-lived because of her divergent political (liberal) and religious (Catholic) views. No buildings on campus bear her name, but her gift of ‘āina has helped to create one of the great educational institutions of the world. We honor the incredible sacrifice of land by Liliha that laid the foundation for Punahou School.

The Kuini Liliha Endowed Financial Aid Fund will support students at Punahou School who qualify for financial aid, with a preference for students of Hawaiian ancestry living outside the Honolulu metropolitan area, on the West and North shores of O‘ahu.
