Christine Sakumoto ’65 Drake

Christine and David Drake honor the memory of her parents, Miriam Mieko and Edward Matsuo Sakumoto, with this fund. Their primary goal in bringing up two daughters was for them to have the best possible education, an opportunity that was not available to them.
Maile Bowman O’Donnell (class of 1924), Christine’s fifth grade teacher in the North Shore plantation community where she grew up, recommended that she apply to Punahou. A big dream was realized with her acceptance and the generous scholarship she received. The many hours spent commuting from the North Shore before most of the freeways were constructed on O‘ahu were more than offset by being taught by the best teachers, forming close friendships which have endured for nearly six decades and gaining valuable life lessons through scholarship jobs and extracurricular activities. It is Christine’s hope that students supported by this fund will share in Punahou’s outstanding academic, cultural and social education.
