Rocky Hill Apiary

Bees are the world’s principal pollinator, many of our common fruits and vegetables – representing a quarter of the American diet, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture – depend on honeybees for reproduction.
The School has access to its own apiary, a place where bees are kept, which serves as a living laboratory to enrich learning from kindergarten to the Academy. The educational apiary on Rocky Hill is complete with a screened-in viewing area separate from the hives, with enough seating for a standard 25-person class.

Kindergarteners and first-graders study pollinators, sixth-graders study ecosystems and freshman look at biological classification, complex populations and interdependence. The apiary reinforces the importance of apiculture and gives students an opportunity to contribute to the research and education that may determine the future of bees.
