Grade 6 – 8

At this stage, students begin their introduction to the culinary arts lab, woodworking and metalworking and more continued emphasis on safety, procedures and learning how to use complex machinery.

Design Technology

  • 6th Grade Course

    This semester-long course taken by all students in Grade 6 provides students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects offered in the Design Technology and Engineering Department.
     
    Social-Emotional-Ethical Learning (SEEL)
    Students develop their social-emotional skills, technical abilities, design thinking, and growth mindset needed to make positive and purposeful action in the real world as well as refine fundamental skills and ways of thinking to take on and solve the problems and challenges.
     
    Approach to Design
    Students learn to identify, explain, and apply the steps of Design Thinking, the five-step design process teaching students to (1) empathize, (2) define, (3) ideate, (4) prototype, (5) test, and repeat as needed. This iterative process is used by designers and problem-solvers to come up with creative and effective solutions. Students also begin to learn  about and use “Ku Hala '' which is a place based Indigeous focused approach to design.
     
     
    Computer Programming
    Students identify, explain, and demonstrate the use of algorithms; constants, variables, and data types; arithmetic, logical, and comparison operators; conditionals and control flow including if and if-else statements; loops and iterations; and functions.
     
    Computer-Aided Design & Fabrication
    Students use age-appropriate computer-aided design tools to conceptualize, visualize, and fabricate ideas. Students learn about rapid prototyping technologies to understand how different processes affect the design process.
     
    Robotics
    Students combine concepts to be able to program, plan, and apply engineering skills to control robotic systems to solve complex problems.
     
  • 7th Grade Course

    This quarter-long course taken by all students in Grade 7 provides students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects offered in the Design Technology and Engineering Department. 

    Social-Emotional-Ethical Learning (SEEL)

    Design Thinking

    Computer Programming
    Students review Programming concepts as they transition from block-based coding and learn about algorithms, data types, operators, conditional code, loops, and functions using text-based commands in common programming languages.
     
    Students apply their knowledge of the design process and code by constructing and programming robotic devices as well as developing simple mobile and web apps demonstrating the use of important programming concepts. Students also learn to consider design, user interface, and user experience in development of their apps.
     
    Rapid Prototyping
    Through the building and programming of robotic devices, students learn to apply rapid prototyping techniques and technologies to understand how differences affect the design process.
     
  • 8th Grade Course

    This quarter-long course taken by all students in Grade 8 provides students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects offered in the Design Technology and Engineering Department.

    Computer-Aided Design & Fabrication
    Students transfer their modeling skills in Tinkercad to using full-featured, industry-standard Computer-Aided Design & Fabrication tools. Students develop and refine their understanding and skills to conceptualize, visualize and model 2D and 3D objects as well as bring their ideas to life.
     
    Rapid Prototyping
    Through active modeling and fabrication, students learn to apply rapid prototyping techniques and technologies to understand how differences affect the design process.

Culinary

  • 6th Grade Course

    Culinary Arts is an introduction to the fundamental principles and techniques/skills of basic cooking.  The course will focus primarily on breakfast cookery but will briefly cover a range of topics that include kitchen safety and sanitation, equipment and tools, measurements, and food preparation and technique. This quarter long course meets once per cycle for 70 minutes. 
     
    The primary objectives of this course is to introduce food education, engage students in learning around food and to help build confidence in the kitchen. Students work in small groups and rotate through different roles in the kitchen. This format encourages teamwork and students learn the importance of communicating effectively and collaborating with their peers to accomplish their cooking assignment.
  • 8th Grade Course

    Culinary Arts is an introduction to the fundamental principles and techniques/skills of basic cooking.  The course will briefly cover a range of topics that include kitchen safety and sanitation, equipment & tools, product ID, culinary math (measurements and conversions), knife skills and methods of cooking. This quarter long course meets twice per cycle for 90 minutes.
     
    The primary objectives of this course is to introduce food education, engage students in learning around food and to help build confidence in the kitchen. Students work in small groups and rotate through different roles in the kitchen. This format encourages teamwork and students learn the importance of communicating effectively and collaborating with their peers to accomplish their cooking assignment.

Woodshop

  • 6th Grade Course

    This class covers the fundamental elements of wood shop and fabrication skills. Students will learn the basic steps needed to design, plan and build using a variety of wood shop materials while students' emotions are addressed to ensure that they are practicing safety precautions and feeling safe. Students will also apply basic Design Thinking principles while they gain solid skills in machining and wood craft fabrication. Students will leave the class with the skills needed to safely operate woodworking hand tools and some machines while they design and build their projects.
  • 8th Grade Course

    This class continues their journey in woodworking and practices of the fundamental elements of the design thinking process. In class, students' emotions are addressed to ensure that they practice safety precautions and feel safe. Students practice the basic steps needed to identify and respond to a client’s needs. Working in design groups they will create design specifications, brainstorm possible solutions. Students will also focus on the key skills and dispositions needed to work successfully in teams. The class focuses on wood shop safety, more advanced hand tool operation, power tool operation, digital design software and rapid prototyping tools such as a laser cutter.
