FIRST LEGO League Jr.

FLL Jr. is a non-competitive program that introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building and programming LEGO-based robots, while also learning about an exciting STEM topic and applying FIRST's Core Values to be a kind and valuable member of a team.

Our teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, learn to make positive contributions to society. In Hawaii, this program is designed for children grades K-4.

* There are no school-sponsored teams, just teams that may happen to be families from Punahou School. Punahou Robotics distills information about FLL Jr based on prior parents' experiences and possibly connects families in need of additional team members.

  • What is FIRST LEGO League Jr?

In four months, teams diligently prepare towards a showcase expo at the Neil Blaisdell Exhibition Hall in December 2019, likely from 8:00am-12:00pm. This year, it's centered around the theme of BOOMTOWN BUILD℠.

    Teams work with these components:
    • Inspire Set: This LEGO set is created just for FIRST LEGO League Jr. teams and will be used by them to complete their challenge for the season. The Inspire Set includes 700+ LEGO elements, including those needed to create the exclusive Inspire Model.
      • Comes with the $99 season registration fee paid to FIRST. See the official website for more info. Includes 6 Engineering Notebooks and 2 Team Meeting Guides.
      • Video playlist of sessions
    • LEGO WeDo 2.0 Set: This is a hands-on STEM solution that combines the LEGO brick, classroom-friendly software, engaging standards-based projects and a discovery based approach. Designed with collaboration in mind, each Core Set supports two students, introducing them to computational thinking and engineering principles in a fun and engaging way. Includes two motors, two sensors, and a Smarthub that receives the code from your computing device (e.g. laptop or tablet with WeDo software)
      • $200 cost purchased through the LEGO Education website.
      • Should you buy one or two sets? It really depends on the team and its goals and resources. If the team is patient and has time for all sessions, you can get by with one kit.
    • Local fee of $60: To support the Expo in December, all FLL, Jr. teams pay a local registration fee. [link not updated to reflect 2019 yet]
    • Tri-fold display board for Show-Me Board

Through the duration of 12 sessions (usually one session per week), teams will embark on a journey of discovery in the worlds of science and technology, focused around the theme of BOOMTOWN BUILD℠.

    They will…
    • Create: Teams illustrate their research and team journey in a Show Me Poster, sharing what they studied and learned.
    • Build: Teams design and build a Team Model based on the Challenge, representing what they have learned.
    • Program: Teams use LEGO® Education WeDo to build and program a model that moves, learning basic engineering and programming concepts.
  • What are teams composed of?

We recommend that each team consist of up to six students from Grades K-4. Students do not need to be in the same grade nor do they need to attend the same school.

Similar to other youth programs, FLL Jr teams are led by two parent volunteer coaches. Unlike the older FIRST programs at Punahou School (FLL, FTC, FRC), there are no faculty/staff who coordinate teams. Families form teams on their own, independent of the school.

As long as you register as a team and have two adult mentors who pass the Youth Protection check, you can be an officially registered team.

Coaches are individuals with at least an interest in science and technology and in helping kids discover and learn. But we can’t emphasize enough that no special technical skills are required. Anyone who wants to be a coach will receive all the training and help he or she needs.

  • When does this start?

The FLL Jr season officially kicks off on Saturday, September 7, with the Hawaii FLL kickoff held at Punahou School. More info found at Hawai'i FIRST Robotics. Teams can begin work as soon as their team is formed.

Teams diligently prepare towards a showcase expo at the Neil Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on a Saturday in December.
  • Where are these held?

Since the teams are not financially supported by Punahou School, families will have to determine the most convenient place for their team to meet.
  • How do I join?
