Handbook

Greetings! The teachers, Summer School administration, and administrative deans are excited to welcome you to the Punahou Summer School program in 2019. Administrative deans have oversight of a grade level and work with families as they transition through the School. Each class of students has one administrative dean for the two years of kindergarten – grade 1, one administrative dean who follows the class from grades 2 – 5, and one administrative dean through the middle school years of grades 6 – 8. The continuity allows the administrative deans to get to know the students in each class and provide a high level of personalized support.

The administrative deans and Summer School faculty look forward to working with your students and with you this summer.

Upon arrival at your scheduled time – kindergarten on June 14 at 4 p.m. and first grade on June 13 at 4 p.m. – you may walk your child up to their classrooms. You will have the opportunity to meet teachers before returning to the Community Room, where the informational meeting for parents will be held. While in the classrooms the students be introduced to their teachers and classmates, and have a short tour of the K – 1 Neighborhood. This event is planned to provide a smooth start to the Summer session which begins on Monday, June 17.

First Day of School

On the first day of school, parents may walk their child to class. Parking is available on Chamberlain (lower) Field. Enter via the Main Gate at Punahou and Wilder streets and follow security instructions. Parking is from 7 – 8:30 a.m. on the first day only.

Dropoff

Beginning at 7 a.m., parents may drop off their children at the K – 1 dropoff/pickup. There are two dropoff lanes: the “Blue” inner lane is open from 7 – 8 a.m. and the “Yellow” outer lane opens at 7:30 a.m.

There is no supervision before 7 a.m. so children must remain in vehicles until that time.

Please have your child's car seat on driver's side for ease and safety when loading and unloading students. Remain in your car and a teaching aide will help your child out of the vehicle.

Before School Procedures

Kindergarten students proceed to the lower playground to hang up their backpacks and enjoy supervised play until 7:45 a.m. They are walked to their classrooms at 7:45 a.m.

Grade 1 students proceed up the steps to the upper playground, drop off their backpacks on their lanais and enjoy supervised play until 8 a.m.

Pickup

First-grade children will be waiting at the “Yellow” outer lane pickup bench under the FIRST GRADE sign.

Name placards are used to help with the traffic flow. They will be provided during orientation on June 13 and 14. Place the colored placard with your child’s name on the front dashboard of your vehicle. Please wait in your car and the teacher or teaching aide will help your child into the car. In the interest of safety, children must enter the car from the driver’s side. For additional safety, please refrain from cell phone usage while driving through campus.

Supervision cannot be provided after 12:30 p.m. If your child is not picked up by 12:30, he/she will be taken to the K – 1 Office in Wilcox Hall.

Please note that parking in the pickup lanes will not be allowed and all cars will be asked to re-circulate if arriving before noon.

Summer Absence Policy

Regular and punctual attendance are expectations of all Summer School students. There are two types of absences: Approved and Not Approved.

Approved Absences

Absences for illness, medical or dental appointments, or funerals are subject to approval by the Academy Summer School Director. The number of such absences allowed during a Summer School course is determined on a case by case basis by the Academy Summer School Director and the Dean.

Not Approved Absences

Absences for family trips, sports trips, driver-license tests, job interviews, employment, summer camp, errands, performances and similar conflicts will not be approved as excused absences from class.

Students will fail a course if they accrue more than two “Not Approved” absences in a 5-week or a 6-week summer course, more than one “Not Approved” absence in a 4-week summer course, or any “Not Approved” absences in a 3-week summer course.

The School reserves the right to request a doctor’s note to substantiate any absence from class unless previously approved by the Director.
