Coach Richard S.H. Wong '56

Richard S.H. “Dickie” Wong was born in Honolulu in 1938.  The eldest of six, Dick grew up helping his father with his poi business and applying his vivid imagination to the people, pastures and farmlands of Manoa Valley and beyond.

Dick landed at Punahou School in seventh grade.  There he found many kindred spirits:  the bold, the clever, and the mischiefmakers who became lifelong friends.
A firearm enthusiast, Dick found focus through ROTC and the rifle team.  His competitive shooting skills would win him a place on the Army pistol and rifle teams and modest success at the national championships.  He also served a decades-long tenure as the coach of the Punahou rifle team.

Dick received a degree in engineering from the University of Hawaii, then spent two years in the army.   He married Christie Lee (’58) in 1969 and had two children:  Cecily (’89) and Richard (’92).

Professionally, a brief civil engineering led to Victoria Ward Limited, where he helped develop Ward Warehouse.  His career as a developer continued in the service of Helumoa Land Company, later Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Inc.  He also assisted his father in developing a subdivision in Manoa Valley, and also the first phase of Manoa Shopping Center.

Dick was passionate about playing contract bridge, hunting, and military march music.  He enjoyed good stories and storytellers, a rare side of beef, and collecting and drinking fine wine.
