Endowed Fund Legacies
Alexander Simpson Atherton ’30 and LeBurta Gates ’35 Atherton
Alexander (Pug) Simpson Atherton was born in 1913. He was the son of descendants of missionaries, Amos Starr and Juliette Montague Cooke. He graduated from Punahou in 1931.
After graduating from Dartmouth College he returned home to work for Matson Navigation, joined the Naval Reserve during WWII and then went on to work for Castle and Cooke and Hawaiian Trust Company. He was also co-owner and President of the Honolulu Star Bulletin. Mr. Atherton was awarded the “O” in Life Award from Punahou in 1992.
LeBurta Gates ’35 Atherton was raised in Denver, Colorado, but attended Punahou from 1930 to 1935. She attended Sarah Lawrence College then married Alexander in Hawai`i in 1941. They had 3 children, Balbi Atherton ’63 Brooks, Frank Atherton, II ’66 and Margie Atherton ’69 Newell. Burta was extremely active in the community doing volunteer work for the Red Cross, Queens Hospital Auxillary, YWCA, Garden Club Outdoor Circle, Honolulu Art Academy and Hawai`i Prep Academy. She enjoyed nature, creative projects, travel and was a volunteer and philanthropist throughout her life.
The Alexander Simpson Atherton ’31 and LeBurta Gates ’35 Atherton Endowed Financial Aid Fund supports students at Punahou School who qualify for financial aid with a preference for students who: 1) have come to Punahou from a public school, 2) were born in Hawai`i, and 3) have a strong academic record.
