Charley's athletic accomplishments in high school, college, pro-ball, and as a coach are legendary. For instance, at Punahou, football: three-year letterman; captain of '48 team; ILH First Team All-Star end '47 and '48; All-Star Shrine Game. Basketball: Four letters; '47 ILH Champs; '48 First Team All-Star. Baseball: four letters; '48 ILH champs; highest batting average.

At Compton Junior College – football: Junior College All-American First Team. At USC – football: Pacific Coast Champs '52; Rose Bowl '53; All-Pacific Coast First Team '52; Honorable Mention All-American '53. Played five positions – offensive guard, tackle, blocking back, defensive tackle, end. Baseball: Pacific Coat Champs '52 (pitcher). Pitched in NCAA Semifinals and College World Series. Pro-Ball – played four positions with the Detroit Lions (center, guard, tackle, end) on three division championship teams and two World Championship Teams (forerunner of today's Super Bowl), and participated in three College-All-Star games and the Hula Bowl. Made first team All-Pro center and All-Pro end – the only player to make All-Pro First Team in more than one position. He was also chosen one of only four offensive linemen picked in 1975 to serve on Detroit's All-Lion All-Time team. As a coach at Punahou: 15 years as offensive line coach. In the community: Police Benefit Game – five years; Semi-Pro League – one year; Kaimuki High – one year; Damien – three years (athletic director – two years).
