Codie Austin Cooke (1937)

A charter member of the Class of 1937, Codie is prominently mentioned in “Punahou 1841 – 1941” by Mary Alexander and Charlotte Dodge for her athletic achievements as a Punahou student. In her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years (1934 – 1937), she won the Territory of Hawaii Women’s Open Golf Championship. In 1934, she defeated her opponent in the 36 hole championship finals by a score of 13 – 11 in a manner described by the Honolulu Advertiser as “the greatest exhibition of golf ever seen in Hawaii.” In both 1936 and 1937, she defeated Jackie Liwai (Pung), who later became a top LPGA golfer, for the championships. She also won the Waialae Country Club Championships in 1936.

In 1938, Codie enrolled at the University of Southern California and immediately became womens champion of the California Country Club. In both 1938 and 1939, she reached the semi-finals of the Southern California Open Championships. Leaving USC in 1939, Codie returned to Hawaii, married and gave up competitive golf to raise two boys.
During the period she was the Hawaiian Open Champion (1934 – 37), she played at least once a year in golf exhibition at Waialae with such Hawaii Golf Hall of Famers as Francis Brown, Guinea Kop and Athur Armstrong, plus other top professionals to raise funds to send local players to the mainland to participate in the National Public Links Championships. In 1936, she played with Francis Brown in a exhibition match against Gene Sarazen and Helen Hicks (Women’s National Champion) before 2,000 spectators.
Still an active golf and sports enthusiast, Codie is a volunteer worker for Hawaiian Open (over ten years) and also in the Hawaiian Ladies Professional Golf Tournament. She was a founding member of the Na Wahine Pa'ani O Punahou and served a term in its first board of directors. She continues to host Club functions, assist in fund raising, help at athletic events and worked in the Carnival booth. For the past five years she has been ‘37 Class Correspondent and 1987, chaired her class’s 50th Reunion. Oh, in her spare time she walks 10 to 15 miles each day.
