Maynard D. “Buster” Piltz (1930)

Baseball
1992 Inductee
Few athletes, if any, in the history of Punahou and the University of Hawaii sports have come close to matching the level of all-around athletic performance achieved by Buster Piltz. At Punahou, where he graduated at age 16 weighing only 125 pounds (he skipped the fourth grade), Buster was a standout in baseball at shortstop, second base, or catcher. He won three letters – the first at age 14, as a sophomore – and played on a college invitational all-star team in his senior year which won the Hawaiian All-Islands Championship.
This article appears as originally published in the Winter 1990 issue of the Punahou Bulletin.

At the University of Hawaii, Buster gained a few pounds and really blossomed – he won 14 letters, starring in football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer and rowing. Highlights of his career include four years as first string quarterback on the varsity football team. Also, as the team’s punter and place-kicker he kicked the extra points which defeated Denver (1933), University of California (1934) and Utah (1935).

In baseball (fourletters) at first and third base, he played on several championship teams and was selected to All-Star squads which toured the Orient and the mainland U.S. playing against major college and professional teams.

Following graduation from U.H. he continued to star as both player and coach on commercial, Honolulu Senior League and U.S. Army teams. During his entire football career he was considered on of Honolulu’s best quarterbacks and kickers. He officiated in a variety of sports for many years and served an eight-year term on the U.H. Athletic Advisory Board. A retired executive of the Bank of Hawaii he is still a highly competitive golfer.
