Harold Tsun Kui “Dope” Yap (1927)

Baseball, Football, Swimming and Track
1980 Inductee
If it had not been for the “four year” rule which made Dope ineligible to participate in ILH competition in his senior year, he would probably have garnered at least eleven instead of eight letters while at Punahou.
This article appears as originally published in the Summer 1980 issue of the Punahou Bulletin.

As it was, he won three letters in football, two each in track and swimming and one in baseball. Captain of the 1925 football team he was selected as First Team All-Star guard. He also captained the 1926 swimming team and won the 1927 Thurston swimming contests. At Washington State he was a three-year letterman in football and a member of its 1932 championship team which played against Alabama in the Rose Bowl of that year. The first part-Hawaiian to play in the Rose Bowl, he was cited for his performance against Alabama even though Washington State lost. He was not only an outstanding football player but also a letterman in swimming and track.
Following graduation he played pro-ball in Boston while attending Harvard's graduate school. Returning to Hawaii he: played football for the Town Team; cached football at St. Louis; joined Punahou's coaching staff where he coached football, track and swimming; became Punahou's Athletic Director; and was an ardent supporter of Punahou after leaving to pursue a business career.
