Endowed Funds

Crean, Pryor, Simons, Torrey

The Crean, Pryor, Simons, Torrey Endowed Fund was established in 2022 by John Crean ’82 to honor his mother, Eileen Crean Bucklin and her former History Department faculty members: Jacques F. Pryor, Dick Simons and Bob Torrey. The initial purpose of this fund is to provide endowed support for curricular and faculty development, with a preference for the Academy Social Studies Department.
From Eileen Crean Bucklin: The rewards for being a part of the Punahou faculty are many. This was especially true for the four of us who worked together in the History Department for many years. Jacques Pryor, Dick Simons, Bob Torrey and myself, Eileen Crean (Bucklin), guided each other in finding creative ways to entice students to love history, a challenge when facing teenagers more interested in almost anything else. We felt we left them with a depth of knowledge which helped them understand the world they were about to enter. The four of us also found we had a common love of good food and wine, making for memorable dinners, many prepared by Jacques, a talented chef.

One unforgettable evening with guests showed how much we appreciated humor. Dick poured a glass of French wine from a bottle with a slightly altered label “Chateau Merde.” We shared the great blessing of having our children get the best education possible. I am deeply humbled by my son, John, who chose to honor me with this Endowed Fund.
