Gerald M.K. ’60 and Diana T. Pang

As parents, we make every effort to let the children experience our willingness to support them in their activities with our time and through our participation. As early as preschool the children were asked to bring two new friends to supper every school day.
The first friend was the name of a person with whom they engaged with the purpose of promoting friendships. The other friend was a book which we would read to them before bedtime. The children were taught that books should be regarded as cherished friends by sharing knowledge. Soon we were told that we were reading too slow and eventually they read at their own pace and choice which became the entry point for each child’s journey in the love of learning.

Gerald, a 1960 Punahou graduate hoped the children would become members of the Punahou family. When Bonnie-Lee ’86, Maynard ’88 and Mei-Lin Tiare ’95 gained admission, we enjoyed watching how quickly they were made aware of their range of potential. The diverse Punahou curriculum developed their capacity for critical and creative thinking as well as interpersonal collaborative skills. Moral and spiritual values were instilled as well as there were numerous opportunities to participate in the extensive menu of physical activities, art and music.

Each of our children continue to express deep appreciation and gratitude for the educational foundation received at Punahou and the lifelong friendships they developed.

It with the greatest pleasure that the Gerald M.K. ’60 and Diana T. Pang Endowed Financial Aid Fund is established to join with other endowments that provide financial assistance to students who show a love of learning and high academic potential and who are on track to become the first generation in their family to attend college.
