Search Committee in “Quiet Phase”

The following message was sent by Mark Fukunaga, Chair, and Deborah Berger, Vice Chair, on behalf of the Presidential Search Committee:

Happy new year! We hope you had restful, joyful and restorative holidays with your families and loved ones.

We write to provide an update from the Presidential Search Committee. Since the position specification was released in November, the Search Committee has been in the “quiet phase” of the search as our team at Spencer Stuart develops a broad and deep pool of potential candidates. We are pleased to report that Punahou’s unique environment is attracting a strong pool of highly qualified candidates.

In tandem with Spencer Stuart’s work, as committee chair and vice chair, we spent a week in early January visiting with a number of school leaders and touring campuses across the continental U.S. to learn more about how different schools are approaching teaching and learning for the 21st century and beyond. The trip was very interesting and enlightening, and we are looking forward to sharing what we learned in the coming weeks.

We expect our committee activities to pick up again in the spring and we will be updating you periodically as things progress. As always, we encourage you to share any thoughts you have about the search with us by emailing If you have candidate recommendations please email

Have a wonderful start to 2018 and we wish the Junior Class a great Carnival!
