“The Fortress of the Bear was unlike anything I had ever seen before,” wrote Sarah Imai ʻ16. “We first caught sight of the bears from a raised platform that was sheltered away from the rain. Originally, we came to paint. Once again, Alaska weather decided to be unpredictable and we were thrown out into the rainy and cold conditions equipped with nothing but our wits and a few shovels.”

“Within four hours we moved four tons of gravel and two tons of sand, turning the previously muddy landscape into something that can withstand the weather better and run the water into the pond. Today was truly a day of learning through service, both of hard work producing results and of believing in a cause and keeping dreams alive.”
