Language and Culture in the Elementary School (LACES)
This enrichment elementary language program (in French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish) is open to students in grades 1 – 6. Students experience an enjoyable introduction to language and culture through games, songs, skits and storytelling.
The Beginning LACES program provides an enjoyable introductory exposure to another language and culture. Children begin to communicate in a different language while experiencing its culture through games, songs, and storytelling.
The Continuing LACES program reviews lessons learned in the beginning level or during Summer School, providing continued exposure to the language and culture.
Students must have successfully completed Beginning LACES or meet other minimum prerequisites to enroll in Continuing LACES classes.
Mandarin Chinese, Hawaiian and Japanese Immersion
These three programs provide a cultural and theme-based immersion environment that challenges students in age-appropriate ways to become capable and confident communicators in Mandarin Chinese, Hawaiian or Japanese through activities and play. All communication will be in the language for some parts of the day (gradually increasing over the year).
Students are placed in small age groups led by advanced Academy language students serving as teaching assistants, and under the supervision of a lead faculty member.
The programs’ theme-based curriculum allows students to repeat the programs from Kindergarten to grade 6, and is designed to allow students with more experience to gain leadership opportunities as they team with those new to the programs.
