Nuremberg and Beyond: The Memoirs of Siegfried Ramler
By Siegfried Ramler
Ahuna Press, Kailua, Hawai'i, 128 pp, $25 (hardcover)

"Nuremberg and Beyond: The Memoirs of Siegfried Ramler" traces the author's remarkable life from childhood in Austria, experiencing annexation by Nazi Germany, escape to England via Kindertransport, life in London during the World War II blitz and his role at war's end as an interrogator and simultaneous interpreter at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, which placed him in contact with Nazi leaders in the defendants' dock. Marriage to a Hawaiian court reporter on the Nuremberg staff led to a move to Hawai'i and the beginning of a long career at Punahou School as teacher, administrator and founding director of the Wo International Center. His career in international education brought him to his current affiliation with Hawai'i's East-West Center. Siegfried Ramler highlights his collaboration with educational leaders and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. The book is available at www.sigramler.com.

Sea of Change: Ernest Hemingway and the Gulf Stream, A Contextual Biography
By Mark Ott
Kent State University Press, 151 pp, $29 (hardcover, cloth)

Former Punahou English faculty member Mark Ott explores Hemingway's life in Key West as he became increasingly involved in big game fishing. The book draws heavily on Hemingway's unpublished fishing logs, demonstrating how they were a renewable source for his fiction. Ott shows how scenes from "To Have and Have Not" and "The Old Man and the Sea" were inspired by Hemingway's actual experience fishing in the Gulf Stream, and how this intimate contact with the natural world transformed not only his aesthetic vision, but also his understanding of his role as a sportsman. No other book on Hemingway has drawn on these fishing logs, and no other book has presented a coherent vision of how Hemingway's contact with the Gulf Stream shaped his work. Available from www.amazon.com and Kent State University Press.

In the Company of Strangers
By Michelle Cruz Skinner
Bamboo Ridge Press, 180 pp., $18 (softcover)

"Sixteen deceptively simple stories comprise Michelle Cruz Skinner's much-anticipated follow-up to 'Balikbayan' and 'Mango Seasons,' many of them about Filipinos tongue-tied and alienated in the motherland, or scattered across the map of heartaches and homesickness in the company of strangers called countrymen, family, lovers. A book of quiet gems definitely worth the wait," writes R. Zamora Linmark, author of "Prime Time Apparitions" and "The Evolution of a Sigh." Born in Manila and raised primarily in Olongapo City, Philippines, Skinner lives in Hawai'i with her husband and two children and teaches Academy English at Punahou School. The book is available at local bookstores or from Bamboo Ridge Press.
