Swimming

The history of swimming at Punahou is long and rich. Not only is swimming fun, it becomes a way of life for many, and swimming skills are a matter of safety in our island community. Punahou offers the opportunity to improve on a swimmer’s talents through its Swim School and its competitive swim program, Punahou Aquatics or PAQ. The program provides instruction and competition for all levels of ability: from entry-level skills to college- and Olympic-level athletes. The team trains at the Waterhouse Pool on campus and competes in swim meets across the state as well as on the mainland.

From the swim school through the competitive groups, the program focuses on technique and conditioning, and provides a fun yet challenging atmosphere for all of its athletes.

Swim School

Swim School is open to swimmers in grades K – 6 who are at the Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced levels of swimming. Swim School prepares swimmers to transition successfully to a competitive swim team. Swim School develops and improves stroke technique for the four competitive swimming strokes, build endurance and teaches racing skills such as starts and turns.

Beginner: Can swim at least one competitive stroke for 10 yards. Swimmers in this level have in-water instruction. The main focus is on freestyle and back-stroke.

Intermediate: Can efficiently swim freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards. Swimmers in this level continue work on freestyle and backstroke, and begin learning breaststroke and butterfly.

Advanced: Can efficiently swim freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards as well as breaststroke and butterfly for 15 yards. Swimmers in this level work on all four strokes and are introduced to competitive starts and turns.
