Elements of Movement

Elements of Movement gives kindergarten – grade 5 students an opportunity to explore various types of movement disciplines in a safe, fun and non-competitive environment. Through proper groupings by age and experience, students are supported and challenged through physical progressions appropriate to their ability and growth.

Program Dates for 2017 – 2018
Fall semester 8/21/17 – 12/20/17
Spring semester 1/16/18 – 5/18/18

In the fall semester, students build a deeper understanding of how their bodies move with the aid of fun physical games/challenges and obstacle courses. Beginning gymnastics tumbling allows students to learn proper forward/backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, round-offs, etc. To ensure their safety, students are able to practice their tumbling skills on gymnastics mats and on the AirTrack: an inflatable tumbling track.

In the spring semester, gymnastics equipment is introduced. Students develop overall upper body strength using the uneven/parallel bars and balance/aerial awareness using the balance beam, vault, mini-trampoline and AirTrack. Students build upon and refine tumbling skills learned in the fall semester.

Outcomes

The program focuses on children:

  • Developing flexibility, coordination, balance, agility and muscular strength.
  • Jumping and landing safely using a variety of takeoff and landing patterns.
  • Building spatial awareness by practicing forward/backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, etc.
