Cycles and Schedules

Punahou’s school day schedule, kindergarten – grade 12, is organized on a 6-day cycle, labeled A- through F-days. Student schedules are planned according to the cycle days rather than week days, allowing for increased flexibility to accommodate the diverse offerings of the Punahou experience.

In grades 9 – 12, each cycle day is divided into 32 “mods,” creating a modular schedule that allows for varied lengths of classes and numbers of meetings per cycle as determined by course requirements. The Academy modular schedule also creates unscheduled time, allowing students to meet with teachers, collaborate on projects and prepare for the responsibilities of freedom in college.

Kindergarten – grade 5 and grades 9 – 12 have two semesters of approximately equal length, while grades 6 – 8 enjoy a trimester schedule. In addition to national and state holidays, Professional Development Days, a Curriculum Day or Intermission Days are held each year to support faculty mid-term planning and facilitate the curricular discussions across grade levels.
