Letter from the O-Men President

Membership Campaign In Full Swing

Department: Athletics

By Rick Humphreys ’90
2006-2007 O-Men President

On October 20th, the O-Men had the pleasure of hosting a social that coincided with a Boys Varsity I and II Water Polo double header against Kamehameha. It was a great opportunity for us to meet many of these outstanding student athletes, their parents and siblings, and to introduce them to what we do for the school. It was also a great time to relax, eat some ‘ono Hawaiian food, and enjoy Punahou’s top-notch athletic facilities.

The O-Men membership and fundraising campaign for the 2006-2007 school year is in full swing with Scott May ’56 leading the charge to increase our membership base. Our goal is to raise enough money to increase our 25 scholarships to a minimum of $1,000 per student athlete. In addition, we will begin funding some non-tuition-related expenses incurred by student athletes that are not typically picked up through financial aid. These include bus fares, lunches, books and equipment. If you have given money for this year’s campaign, thank you.

I am also pleased to report that the O-Men have formed a steering committee, led by Doug Kilpatrick ’57, to rejuvenate the Punahou Athletic Hall of Fame. We have a monumental task ahead of us. The last time we added athletes to the Hall of Fame was in 1997. We currently have only sixty-nine athletes: seven from the 50s, six from the 60s and three from the 70s, so we have some catching up to do.

We are now collecting nominations for Punahou male and female athletes. Awardees will be chosen by a selection committee and inducted into the Hall of Fame in a Fall 2007 ceremony. The event will emphasize the years 1960-1989. Nominees must have graduated from Punahou and lettered in a varsity sport(s). Please contact Doug Kilpatrick at kilipaka@hawaii.rr.com or Eric Schiff at eschiff@pixi.com for nomination forms or visit www.punahou.edu/athletics. The deadline for submitting the forms is March 30, 2007.

Our monthly meetings continue and we encourage anyone interested to come by the Pacific Club on the first Monday of every month. Remember, all ‘first-timers” who are interested in joining or becoming more active in the O-Men get a free lunch.
