The board members of Na Wahine Pa‘ani o Punahou gathered on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 to present a gas-powered golf cart to Punahou’s Girls Softball team and the Punahou athletic department. Athletic Director Tom Holden and Associate Athletic Director Jeff Meister, along with Softball Assistant Coach Gerald Tanaka ’78 were on hand to accept the golf cart, a gift that was made possible by a generous donation from Erma Metz Brown.

Erma is a beloved, second-grade teacher who taught at Punahou for one year (1946 to 1947). She says she is a big supporter of girls’ athletics because her “participation in sports led to many pleasant lifetime experiences.” She began playing in organized sports in sixth grade and her love for physical fitness led her to participate in seven sports while studying at the University of Southern California (USC). She earned the prestigious women’s USC athletic sweater and, in her senior year, was president of the Women’s Athletic Association before graduating with a minor in physical education.

The donation of the gas-powered golf cart was the brainchild of Punahou’s Softball Head Coach Kara Nishimura ’89. Kara made a presentation to the Na- Wa-hine Pa-‘ani o Punahou board in the fall of 2006, explaining the need for a cart powerful enough to tow the large drag the team uses to smooth their infield. The board voted to purchase the cart, and, with Erma’s blessing, voted to name it after her.

Na- Wa-hine Pa-‘ani o Punahou would again like to thank Erma for her generous donation. Pa-‘ani recognizes the importance athletics plays in girls’ lives and the opportunities it provides them. Supporters like Erma Metz Brown help us continue that tradition.
