Tennis - Day 2 Play

After winning both rounds on Friday, the Punahou team advanced to the semifinals on Saturday against Menlo High School, last year’s #1-ranked team in Northern California. All the matches were close, but the girls fought hard to take a 6 - 1 victory. Some of the matches could have easily gone the other way, but the girls stayed cool under pressure and set themselves up for a chance to play for the championship.

Our wild ride came to an end, though, in the finals of the Golden State Classic against Peninsula, the #1-ranked team in Southern California last year. The girls played tough and battled hard, but unfortunately Peninsula was too strong and we went down swinging 5 - 2. We had a few opportunities to win 3rd doubles and 4th singles, but fell just short. Our wins came at first and second doubles.

Overall, I was very proud of the girls and I think a lot of them surprised themselves with just how competitive we were with the top California teams. This is an experience to be remembered for all the players, and I feel very fortunate to have been along for the ride.
