Varsity Golf - Arizona

September 5, 2015

The boys and girls Varsity Golf teams traveled together to Scottsdale, Arizona, to participate in the Antigua National High School Invitational, hosted by Hamilton High School. The tournament featured 24 boys teams and 18 girls teams from across the nation and Canada. Punahou was able to field two boys teams, with five players each, and the girls team consisted of six players.

The players departed Honolulu on September 2, with tournament play beginning on September 4 – one day to acclimatize. On the first day of play, the coach report was that the girls played very steady and that, after a rough start, the boys settled down and fought back for a T3 finish. Players were feeling good and spent a lot of time on the range post-round, ready for day two.

Returning to the hotel to study, relax and swim, the plays finished their monster pizza dinner poolside. Then it was early to bed!

The second day of play resulted in the girls taking second place as a team with Aiko Leong '16 winning the individual championship and Allisen Corpuz '16 taking sixth. The boys fought hard against some really good competition and finished with a strong T5.

The teams celebrated at Yogurtland before heading off to dinner.

Coaches and players are grateful for the opportunity to go on this trip and play against some great teams.

Mahalo to Coach Ed Kageyama for reporting and photographs.
