Students performed for the final time in China alongside the Guangzhou Youth Symphony. With members from all over the Guangdong area, the youth symphony performed various pieces for individual instruments and for the entire symphony. Punahou students were amazed by the skill level and the age range of 12-18 year olds in the symphony. After the joint concert, all of the musicians were given time to mingle and exchange gifts with one another. Some students became fast friends and were already exchanging social media accounts after the first 20 minutes of talking. This was the final opportunity for Punahou students to meet and interact with Chinese students, and many were sad to see the other go by the end of the event.
In the evening, a farewell dinner was held for the Punahou orchestra. Students and teachers reflected on the trip; although the week in China had its ups and downs, everyone felt happy―and even emotional―when they looked around at the new friends and connections that they had made. The seniors, especially, felt bittersweet upon realizing that they only have a month left with the symphony orchestra. The students will all embark on the long trip back to Honolulu tomorrow morning..
