Wayne Williams ’62

Wayne Williams was the inspirational leader of the 1961 Punahou football team that won the ILH championship to cap off an undefeated season. The captain received the Paul L. Stupin Memorial Award for the state Player of the Year as a senior after leading the Buff ’n Blue to an 8-0 record, beating Roosevelt, 53-26, in the Thanksgiving Day game at Honolulu Stadium.

Williams was the Back of the Year as a senior after he ran for 603 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He also starred in baseball, helping Punahou to ILH titles as a sophomore – the same year he won the ILH batting crown – and as a junior.

The multifaceted athlete participated in basketball, track and field, and rowing in his career at Punahou and was named athlete-of-the-year as a freshman.
