Kumu Crew to East Coast

April 5, 2016

In from Starr Johnson '98

We have arrived in Orlando! We had a long 10-hour flight to JFK but met a wonderful Punahou parent flight attendant who connected us to the in-flight movies, which made for seemingly shorter trip. When we arrived in JFK we had time to get a big meal in. The hostess was excited that we would get to try an "American" breakfast. I'm not sure if she knows Hawai‘i is a part of the United States as well! We also got to teach our waiter about the ti leaf lei we were all wearing that I had made for the crew. He was intrigued and thought lei were only made of bright colorful flowers.

The entire crew passed out on our flight from NYC to Orlando – we clearly hadn't really slept on the first flight. It was really cool to see the Intercoastal Waterway from the sky as we approached landing as that will be our route for much of our journey. Although tired, the crew is excited! We will soon head to the arrival ceremony to help greet the wa'a and the crew of leg 18. We are excited to see Hokule‘a once again as it has been since March and July 2015 since Kaniela and I saw and sailed on her last.
