Mālama Kumu in Australia

June 11, 2015

Upon arriving in Townsville, Australia, Heather and Malia met up with Junior School PE teacher Kaniela Lyman-Mersereau ’05, who will be sailing with Hokule‘a on another leg of the trip this summer. (Kaniela previously sailed aboard Hokule‘a and Hikianalia in the fall of 2014.) He showed Heather and Malia around Hokule‘a and taught them about sailing.

One photo of Kaniela shows him strumming a guitar that belonged to the late Ka‘au McKenney, a former Punahou teacher and renowned navigator. His guitar “goes on every journey,” Heather explained. “Hokule‘a has brought rain everywhere they've sailed – this is usually Australia's dry season, but their summer (which is usually their wet season) was dry, so the rain is a blessing. Awesome experiences so far.”
