San Francisco G-Term: School Visits

Today was our first full day in California. We left San Francisco early in the morning and headed to Palo Alto. There we visited the indigenous program at Stanford University and later shared our presentation about Hawaiʻi, Hōkūleʻa and the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage at Castilleja School for Girls.

During our visit at Stanford we met with a Stanford alum, Dahlton Brown, who shared with us his passion and love for his indigenous culture, as well as the other cultures that Stanford supports. We learned that Stanford has groups for Native Hawaiians as well as other Polynesian groups, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos and Native Americans. During our time with Dahlton we learned about the many aspects of a Stanford education, which led to an informative discussion about the application process and how admissions look at more than just a GPA.

Growing up in Hawaiʻi many of us have learned/experienced Hawaiian culture. We never have had a full understanding about other cultures that make up the rest of the world, so hearing someone be so passionate about their own personal culture other than Hawaiian really gave our group a different perspective about how people value their own cultures. Recognizing that Dahlton, along with our group, share a deep passion for culture made us feel deeply connected with him.

The second half of our day was at Castilleja School. At the school we ate lunch with other students and were given a tour of the campus by a teacher. We had the opportunity to present to middle school students through hula, oli and legends of Hawaiʻi. The whole school is having a global week that focuses on migration, which tied nicely into our message of the World Wide Voyage of the Hōkūleʻa and Mālama Honua.

We had a great day at the two schools. We now feel a deeper connection with Hawaiian culture along with other indigenous cultures.
